Brief Biographies • Principal Partners

Ann Zabaldo is both a pioneer volunteer and a paid professional in the cohousing movement. She specializes in outreach education, marketing, and fueling the fires of burning souls.


Ann is past-president of The Cohousing Association of the United States and is a founder and current board member of Mid Atlantic Cohousing, a regional non-profit organization. She is a certified facilitator for McCamant & Durrett’s Senior Cohousing Study Group workshops.


She is co-executive producer of Building Sustainable Communities for Today’s Housing Market  a DVD and companion handbook created specifically for developers who are interested in entering the cohousing market niche.


Ann was on the development team for both Eastern Village Cohousing in Silver Spring, Maryland and Takoma Village Cohousing in Washington, DC where she lives with 65 adults, 24 children, seven dogs and waaaay too many cats.


Her description of living in cohousing?  “It’s a never ending, rolling Mardi Gras!”

Jack Wilbern brings design, facilitation, development and community life skills to the collaborative effort. Jack is the architect/planner and a founding resident of Blueberry Hill cohousing community in Vienna, VA (completed in 2000). He is also a principal partner of the architectural firm, Butz • Wilbern, with extensive experience in project development and management.

Jack is a graduate of California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo (where he and Chuck Durrett, author of "Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves", were classmates). He is a member of ULI-The Urban Land Institute, holds an NCARB national certification and is currently licensed as an architect in 12 states.

Sam Butz grapples with all the design, project management, and construction aspects of development projects. He provides a strong sense of practicality to the team. It is his mix of expertise, practicality, and solid honesty that so many clients have come to value in working with him. Sam is also a principal partner of the architectural firm, Butz • Wilbern.

Sam is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and has been working every day (and many nights) since, towards the best answer, the best solution, and the fairest compromise on every project.
